Amsterdam Sinfonietta has been the only professional string orchestra in the Netherlands for thirty years, performing worldwide. The ensemble consists of 22 string players and is led by violinist and artistic director Candida Thompson, who leads the orchestra from the concertmaster position.
Founded in 1988, Amsterdam Sinfonietta had Lev Markiz as its first artistic director. Candida Thompson has been associated with Amsterdam Sinfonietta as concertmaster since 1995, and since 2003, she has also served as its artistic director. Playing without a conductor requires a significant commitment and involvement from all musicians. Therefore, the orchestra includes musicians who perform at a soloist level.
