Braat was born in Leiden (1950) as the son of archaeologist Wouter C. Braat and grew up in Oegstgeest. After obtaining his Gymnasium diploma, he went on to study History and Theater Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
In 1980, Braat attended the Amsterdam Theatre School for a short period, where he pursued courses in directing/documentary. Bartho has been active as an actor and is also involved in reading aloud. He has narrated Christmas stories in Abcoude, at the Apollo First Theater, and in Amsterdam for Stadsdorp Zuid.
