Bastiaan Jan studied at the Schumann Academy in Amsterdam with Euwe de Jong and took organ improvisation courses at the Summer Academy for Organists in Haarlem with Jos van der Kooy (beginners course 2006), Thomas A. Nowak (advanced 2008) and Peter Planyavsky (advanced 2016). In 2009 Bastiaan Jan reached the finals of the National Improvisation Competition in Amsterdam (Orgelpark). He also took organ and improvisation lessons with Jos van der Kooy (Westerkerk Amsterdam, Grote or Sint Bavokerk in Haarlem) and with Anton Pauw (Grote or Sint Bavokerk and Nieuwe Kerk in Haarlem). As a composer, Bastiaan Jan is self-taught and has now written an oeuvre of 33 works, including eight orchestral symphonies, a string quartet, choral works with orchestral accompaniment, an oratorio and a number of separate works, including choral settings for interdenominational use, including the Roman Catholic liturgy. See webshop. Bastiaan Jan is also the poet of 153 sonnets (publishing process is underway), and he writes many texts on various subjects with music, world literature and theology as a starting point. There is a plan to collect and publish these texts. Bastiaan Jan also studied piano and (orchestral) conducting at the Sweelinck music academy with Alfred Snel (at the time based in The Hague) as well as studying organ, piano and music theory with Marco at de Vaate in Haarlem in the Mennonite Church. In his youth he received his first organ lessons from his father at the age of eight and at the age of ten the late Leen Schippers in Lisserbroek became his organ teacher. Furthermore, Bastiaan Jan gives (organ) improvisation lessons, the basic principles of music theory, including music history, composition lessons -including orchestration- and he is available to prepare students for the conservatory. In addition, he gives honest and appropriate advice, tailored to the situation and personality of the individual student. Bastiaan Jan stood at the cradle of the tradition of the annual New Year's concert in the New Church of Katwijk aan Zee and played his first organ improvisation album in it. He also gave concerts in the Bovenkerk in Kampen, the Grote Kerk in Gorinchem and in the Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden. He recently played his first online organ concert from the Cathedral Basilica Sint Bavo in Haarlem.
