Gerben Budding is a church musician at the St. John’s Church in Gouda. In Gouda, he has also been appointed as the city organist by the municipality. He is associated with the Dom Church in Utrecht as the vespers organist. Additionally, he serves as the music curator of the Goudse Sint-Jan Foundation and is the cantor of the Theological University of Apeldoorn (TUA).
Gerben is internationally active as a concert organist and enjoys collaborating with vocalists and instrumentalists. Since 2018, he has formed a soprano-organ duo with soprano Nanette Mans.
His broad repertoire spans all stylistic periods, resulting in thoughtful and surprising programming during concerts. Gerben is an enthusiastic promoter of Dutch organ music. He not only devotes significant attention to contemporary Dutch organ music (including the works of Daan Manneke), but he also revives forgotten Dutch Masters. In this context, he achieved a world premiere with the first complete CD recording (9 CDs) of the organ works of Samuel de Lange Jr., a recording that was highly praised.
He received his education at the Utrecht Conservatory, where he obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Organ with a major in Improvisation (both summa cum laude), a first-degree qualification as a Church Musician, and a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Choral Conducting (with distinction).
He won first prize at the International Organ Competition ‘Agati-Tronci’ in Pistoia (Italy), second prize at the International Schnitger Competition in Alkmaar, the Litaize Prize at the International César Franck Competition in Haarlem, and the audience prize at the improvisation competition in Dudelange (Luxembourg).
Gerben conducts several oratorio choirs, a symphony orchestra, and the Vocaal Ensemble Piacevole.
