Gijsbertha worked for some time at the Donner bookstore and took evening courses in shorthand, typing and archive management (actuary). When she married Gijsbert Gilles Brandt in 1931, she was head of the typing room of the City Carpentry Gardens of the municipality of Rotterdam and secretary to the alderman for Public Works. As a married woman and mother of two children, she continued to work in these positions and was the breadwinner for the family.
