More than 76 times played this month
Jan Vermeire (° 1968) studied organ with Robert Deleersnyder at the Music Academy of Veurne and later with Hubert Schoonbroodt at the French-speaking department of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. He also regularly took lessons from the Hungarian-Viennese music pedagogue Hedda Szamosi. He studied choral conducting with Florian Heyerick at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent.
Since December 2011 he has been organist-titular of the modernist Church of Our Lady of the Dunes in Koksijde.
He is often asked as a concert organist at home and abroad. In recent years he has been heard in the Netherlands, Andorra, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Italy, Germany, Slovakia, France, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia (Sydney and Melbourne) and has made a major concert tour in the United States with performances in New York City, Washington DC, Shenandoah University and on the famous organ of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.He has made several CD recordings in Stavele, Veurne, Cuxhaven, Porrentruy, Andorra and Béthune, among others. In December 2024, a new double CD will be released that he recorded with his colleagues Luk Bastiaens and Edward Van Marsenille on historic organs in French Flanders, a project of the magazine Orgelkunst.
Jan Vermeire likes to experiment and is constantly looking for new impulses in organ life. With narrator Peter Van Bouwel, he brings organ fairy tales for children as the OrgelJan, such as the story of Babar, the little elephant, and Carolus Trippel and the enchanted organ.
He often plays with other classical musicians such as Alain De Rudder (trumpet), Dimos de Beun (recorder) and is a member of the Trio Seraphim with soprano Hilde Coppé and trumpeter Bart Coppé. With another companion, the Ukrainian bayan player Bogdan Nesterenko, he has set up a program for Russian accordion and organ, a very original combination.
During the corona pandemic, Jan Vermeire started a new project: BACH InteGRAAL with the intention of eventually performing the entire organ work of Johann Sebastian Bach. He has already played thirteen Bach concertos, some for a live audience, some were broadcast via YouTube, and can still be watched and listened to there. For this he received support from the Flemish Government.
In July 2023, he was a guest soloist in the Night of the Proms Summer Edition in Koksijde.
