Maarten van der Valk
Born in Johannesburg (South Africa) to Dutch parents; moved to Holland with family at the age of 11. Played piano and trumpet and started playing drums at the age of twelve. His father was a prominent jazz drummer during the late 1930s and early 1940s; his brother is a professional blues and rock drummer.
It has always been my ambition to bring together different sounds, rhythms, colors and structures. From the touch of a hand on a drum to the heartbeat of a stick. From primitive rhythms on wood and natural skins, via bare hands on timpani and bass drum, to dreams behind the piano surrounded by drums, finally ending jazzy and funky on the kit. These are my musical roots, which I hope you will enjoy.
