Who am I?

My name is Marjo van Someren, born and raised in Amersfoort. Afterwards I lived in Amsterdam where I studied at the conservatory, majoring in singing. Since 2004 I have lived with my partner Bart Oenema in Kampen, where we have since set up fun musical projects under the name 'Muziek op Zolder'. I have been working at Quintus as a singing teacher since 2018.

What do I do at Quintus?

At Quintus I have a nice group of singing students of all ages. I am also the conductor of the Quintus Monday Afternoon Choir and the Quintus Women's Choir. The Monday Afternoon Choir is a group of enthusiastic people with whom we sing a very different repertoire: from folk music to world music, from classical to pop. With the Women's Choir we sing classical pieces by composers such as Mendelssohn, Rheinberger, Fauré and Schubert, but also more contemporary composers such as Cesar Bresgen and Günther Raphael. It is a chamber choir, the size varies from 16 – 22 members. The women are enthusiastic advanced singers who want to learn the tricks of ensemble singing.

What is the best part of my job?

That it is so incredibly diverse! Every voice is unique, that's why every lesson is different. After all, every vote requires a different approach. Leading the choirs is also special because many voices have to merge together, it has to sound beautiful while everyone brings their own sound. That is a very special process. What I find most rewarding is passing on my knowledge as a singer and chorister.

What is my motto?

Sing freely, because singing makes your breath flow and releases energy that is audible in sound and expression. Singing gives relief!!!
