Martin van de Merwe, born in Oud-Beijerland in 1957, studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory with Pieter Gouderjaan and at the Folkwang Hochschule für Music in Essen with Hermann Baumann.
In 1980 he was awarded the Prix d'Excellence promised. He has been a member of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra since 1973, first as third horn player, and from 1983 as solo horn player.
He has now regularly performed as a soloist with this orchestra, including in the works of Haydn and Schumann, as well as in Britten's Serenade.
Martin van de Merwe is a member of the Dutch Brass Quintet and works as a horn major teacher at the conservatories of The Hague and Rotterdam.
