Matthijs Valkenwoud was born in 1983 in Voorburg (The Hague). At the age of seven, he joined the local brass band where he took trumpet lessons. From 2002 onwards, Matthijs studied classical trumpet at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, where he completed his studies with a Master Degree in 2008. This was followed by the Bachelor's degree in Hafabra conducting at the same institute from 2016 to 2020. In addition to his work as a trumpet player, Matthijs is a conductor and makes various arrangements for Hafabra orchestras.

Since his conservatory studies, Matthijs has taught trumpet (and brass) at various locations such as music associations and music schools. Matthijs currently has his teaching practice at the Koorenhuis, the music school in The Hague. Since 2016 he has also been the conductor of various wind orchestras. In addition to teaching and conducting, Matthijs played as a freelance trumpet player with many (choral accompaniment) orchestras such as: The Promenade Orchestra, Randstad Accompaniment Orchestra, The Orchestra of the East, The Residentie Orkest, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Musical producers Stage Entertainment (Joop van den Ende) and Mark Vijn.
