Ted van Lieshout was born on December 21, 1955, in Eindhoven, in a family of twelve children. At the age of nineteen, Van Lieshout began studying at the art academy in Amsterdam. In that same year, six of his poems were published in a debut anthology. Five years later, he started working as a certified illustrator and graphic designer.
His work mainly consisted of designing book covers for publishing houses and creating illustrations for newspapers and magazines. Together with illustrator Philip Hopman, he founded the Boer Boris Fund in 2021, which awards encouragement prizes to budding/young children's book creators for five years. The first two prizes, each worth 5000 euros, were awarded in 2022.
